Hanoi to Mai Chau: the honest guide
Mai Chau is a peaceful valley of stilt-house homestays and rice fields about 140 km southwest of Hanoi. It's a popular weekend escape, roughly three to four hours away by road. Here's how to get there.
Hanoi → Mai Chau
Cheapest

Private car
from ~$70· ~3.5h
Direct and flexible — worth it for a couple or small group.
Reserve a private car →Which should you pick?
The limousine van is the clear winner here: it's cheap, and unlike the public bus it takes you all the way into the valley rather than dropping you on the highway. Choose the bus only to save a few dollars, or a private car if you're travelling as a group.
Why go to Mai Chau
It's the closest place to Hanoi where you can cycle between Thai and Muong villages, sleep in a stilt house, and see rice terraces without the long haul to Sa Pa. One or two nights is plenty.
